This CD-ROM is a reflection of interagency efforts towards disaster mitigation. Containing publications in the areas of disaster preparedness and mitigation, public health management and humanitarian assistance, it is a tool that, we hope will help the aid community respond to any emergency with a well coordinated public health approach.
The compilation has been produced by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Sphere Project, thanks to the generous support of the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID), the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the Division of Humanitarian Assistance, Peace and Security of the Canadian International Development Agency (HAPS/CIDA), and the Office for Foreign Disaster Assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (OFDA/AID).
We also acknowledge technical contributions from the World Food Program (WFP), Joint United Nations Program on HIV-AIDS (UNAIDS), Overseas Development Institute, International Life Sciences Institute, UN-Secretariat for International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), the University of Wisconsin, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
The collection of publications on this CD-ROM is open-ended and will be revised and expanded to incorporate new material as well as new technologies to make using this information tool more versatile and powerful without sacrificing its practicability and ease-of use. New versions of the Health Disaster Library will be available in the not-too-distant future.
