How to find information

There are 5 ways to find information in this collection:

You can search for particular words that appear in the text from the "search" page. This is the first page that comes up when you begin, and can be reached from other pages by pressing the Search button. You can perform a search in chapters or in titles, by type of publication, by organization and/or by language. Click on the "Search" button for a full-text search. Click on a document icon to view a full version of the listed document.

You can access publications by topic by pressing the Topics button. There are two types of Topics in this collection: General Topics and Detailed Topics. Click on a general topic or on a detailed topic to obtain the list of concerned documents.

You can access publications by title by pressing the Titles A-Z button. This brings up a list of books in alphabetical order. To display a list of documents starting with the characters in a group (e.g. A-B-C-D) click on the corresponding letter group. Note that titles beginning with a number are listed under A-B-C-D.

You can access publications by organization by pressing the Organizations button. This brings up a list of organizations. Select the icon of an organization to view the concerned documents.

You can access publications by keyword by pressing the Keywords button. This brings up a list of keywords in alphabetical order. Click on the bookshelf icon of a keyword to obtain the concerned documents or to return to the main list of keywords.
How to read the books

You can tell when you have arrived at an individual book because there is a photograph of its front cover at the top left of the page. On the right side of the photograph there is the table of contents where the current chapter is marked with bold letters. This table is expandable: click on the folders to open them or close them. Click on the open book at the top to close it.

Underneath is the text of the current section. When you have read through it, there are arrows at the bottom to take you on to the next section or back to the previous one.

Below the navigation buttons line, there are five buttons. Click on Expand Document to expand out the whole text of the current document, or on Expand Chapter to expand the content of the selected chapter. If the book is large, this could take a long time and use a lot of memory! Click on Full TOC to expand out the whole table of contents so that you can see the titles of all chapters and subsections. Preferences helps to set the default for displaying the table of contents.

Under the document's cover there are three buttons which help to export the current document:

Printable version opens the printable friendly version of the current section.

Export document as HTML file allows you to export the currently opened document to a stand-alone HTML file on diskette or PC. Please click on the small Help button for more guidelines.

Export document as PDF file - each document in the collection can be exported in PDF format. For bigger documents, generating the PDF file might require more time, please wait few seconds until the file is created.

How to search for particular words

From the search page, you make a query in these simple steps:

  1. Specify what items you want to search
  2. Say whether you want to search for all or just some of the words
  3. Type in the words you want to search for
  4. Click the Search button

When you make a query, the titles of 50 matching documents will be shown. There is a button at the end to take you on to the next 50 documents. From there you will find buttons to take you on to the third 50 or back to the first 50, and so on. Click the title of any document, or the little button beside it, to see it.

By default the search returns all the matching results. You can change this option by clicking the Preferences at the top of the page.

Search terms

Whatever you type into the query box is interpreted as a list of words called "search terms." Each term contains nothing but alphabetic characters and digits. Terms are separated by white space. If any other characters such as punctuation appear, they serve to separate terms just as though they were spaces. And then they are ignored. You cannot search for words that include punctuation.

For example, the query

Agro-forestry in the Pacific Islands: Systems for Sustainability (1993)

will be treated the same as

Agro forestry in the Pacific Islands Systems for Sustainability 1993

Query type

There are two different kinds of query.

  • Queries for all of the words. These look for documents (or chapters, or titles) that contain all the words you have specified. Documents that satisfy the query are displayed, in alphabetical order.

  • Queries for some of the words. Just list some terms that are likely to appear in the documents you are looking for. Documents are displayed in order of how closely they match the query. When determining the degree of match,

    • the more search terms a document contains, the closer it matches;
    • rare terms are more important than common ones;
    • short documents match better than long ones.

Use as many search terms as you like - a whole sentence, or even a whole paragraph. If you specify only one term, documents will be ordered by its frequency of occurrence.

Scope of queries

In most collections you can choose different indexes to search. For example, there might be author or title indexes. Or there might be chapter or paragraph indexes. Generally, the full matching document is returned regardless of which index you search.

If documents are books, they will be opened at the appropriate place.

Change preferences

On the Help page, there are two pairs of buttons that control the case differences and word endings of your queries. The first set of buttons controls whether upper and lower case must match (case differences). The second set controls whether to ignore word endings or not (word endings).

For example, if the buttons ignore case differences and ignore word endings are selected, the query

African building

will be treated the same as

africa builds

because the uppercase letter in "African" will be transformed to lowercase, and the suffixes "n" and "ing" will be removed from "African" and "building" respectively (also, "s" would be removed from "builds").

Finally, you can control the number of hits returned, and the number presented on each screenful.

9 useful tips to get started in five minutes

1. You can search publications in this library by typing words to search, by topics, by titles, by organizations and by keywords.

2. To explore the library click on the covers which appear every five seconds on the home page, scroll the titles a-z list or type your query in the search window.

3. Searching for some words displays the titles by nearest hits.

4. Searching for all words displays the results alphabetically by titles. This is the default search. To view matches starting with "Z" set your preferences to display the maximum number of hits.

5. Use "quotation marks" to search for exact matches of words.

6. Performing a search or looking for a keyword will search and highlight these words in all subsequent consultations of the library till the "Clear" button is used. It takes up more processing time if you do not use the "Clear" button. So please use the "Clear" button after every search or keyword consultation.

7. Normally, only one chapter or paragraph at a time is displayed. The [Expand Document] button allows you to view the complete text of the document. Use the [Expand Chapter] button to view the entire content of the selected chapter on the same page.

8. The button expands the complete table of contents.

9. Set your preferences to suit your needs. The number of total hits displayed can be set up to 50.000 or more, with 10 to 500 hits per page. The "ignores word endings" setting augments the number of hits. You can change the preferences to uppercase / lowercase sensitivity if needed.
